NHKGIF Sea Kayak Instructor

To obtain certification as a NHKGIF Instructor an individual must complete the 3 steps of NHKGIF instructors training course.

Step 1.  – Evaluation and admission to NHKGIF instructor’s course

Step 2.  -instructors course, pass exam and a technical paddling skills evaluation

Step 3.  – log as an instructor apprentice 2 complete sea kayaker 1 (80 Hours) courses through an apprenticeship position with a NHKGIF accredited company; under the mentorship of NHKGIF Association Instructor

A NHKGIF certified instructor has the following qualifications and conditions

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Completed steps 1-3 of NHKGIF instructor training
  • Logged a min. of 200km on class 1-3 seas, in which a min. of 100km is on class 3 (NHKGIF)
  • Passed the NHKGIF instructor exam and received a written recommendation from  their apprentice supervisor and mentor
  • Hold a valid WFR certification with CPR endorsement
  • Have a valid VHF license
  • Passed a level 4 technical skill evaluation (PTF-4)
  • Submit updated renewed certifications as necessary to NHKGIF

The International Federation of Sea Kayak Guide & Instructors Associations (IFSKGIA)

IFSKGIA Associate Sea Kayak Guide & Instructor

To obtain certification as an IFSKGIA Associate Guide an individual must be accepted into IFSKGIA Guide training program and have completed IFSKGIA’s 15-week guide course

Step 1.  – Evaluation and admission to IFSKGIA guide leadership course

Step 2.  – Completed and passed IFSKGIA’s guide leadership course (15 weeks)

Step 3.  – log as a guide apprentice 80 days of commercial sea kayak guiding on class 1-2 seas (IFSKGIA) through an apprenticeship position with a IFSKGIA accredited company; under the mentorship of a IFSKGIA Senior Guide.

An IFSKGIA associate guide is a limited certification, in which the certified associate guide has 3 year to complete the requirements needed to qualify for certification as certified a IFSKGIA guide & instructor

An IFSKGIA Associate Guide:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Completed steps 1-3 of IFSKGIA guide training
  • Logged a min. of 100km on class 1-3 seas, in which a min. of 25km is on class 3 (IFSKGIA)

IFSKGIA certified associate guide and instructor are required to:

  • Complete all the guiding requirements; pass the guides’ exam, and IFSKGIA’s technical skills evaluation within 3 years of obtaining an IFSKGIA Associate Guide certification.
  • Member in good standing, by paying IFSKGIA’s yearly membership fee,

IFSKGIA Sea Kayak Guide & Instructor

To obtain certification as an IFSKGIA Guide an individual must:
– Hold a IFSKGIA Associate Guide & Instructor Certification
– Complete all the guiding requirements
– Pass the guides’ exam, and IFSKGIA’s technical skills evaluation

An IFSKGIA certified guide has the following qualifications and conditions

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Completed steps 1-3 of IFSKGIA guide training
  • Logged a min. of 300km on class 1-3 seas, in which a min. of 150km is on class 3 (IFSKGIA)
  • Must have logged a minimum of 180 days as a IFSKGIA guide, whereof a minimum of 30 days are guiding on class 3 seas (IFSKGIA)
  • Passed the IFSKGIA guide exam and received a written recommendation from their apprentice supervisor and mentor
  • Hold a valid WFR certification with CPR endorsement
  • Have a valid VHF license
  • Passed a level 5 technical skill evaluation (PTF-5)
  • Submit updated renewed certifications as necessary to IFSKGIA

IFSKGIA’s certified guides and instructors are required to:

  • Work as professional sea kayaks guide or instructors for a min. of 40 days in the span of 2 consecutive years.
  • Log 4 non-commercial sea kayak trips of a least 200km on class 1-3 seas, in which a min. of 100km is on class 3 (IFSKGIA) in the span of 2 consecutive years
  • Participate and complete a least 1 guide/instructor workshop during the span of 2 consecutive years.
  • Maintain current your WFR certification with CPR endorsement and submit updated renewed certifications as necessary to IFSKGIA
  • Member in good standing, by paying IFSKGIA’s yearly membership fee

IFSKGIA Senior Sea kayak Guide & Association Instructor

A certified IFSKGIA Senior Guide/Association Instructor holds the title of IFSKGIA – International Federation of Sea Kayak Guides& Instructors Association and is authorized to guide on all the world’s waterways. A Senior Guide is also qualified to be a guide instructor and examiner for IFSKGIA.

An IFSKGIA Certified Senior Guide has the following qualifications and conditions

  • Must be age 30 or older
  • Must hold IFSKGIA classification – Guide & Instructor
  • Must have logged a minimum of 680 days as a NHKGIF guide, whereof a minimum of 220 days guiding on class 3 seas (IFSKGIA)
  • Logged a min. of 600km on class 1-3 seas, in which a min. of 400km is on class 3 (IFSKGIA)
  • Hold a valid WFR certification with CPR endorsement
  • Have a valid VHF license
